Zoomlion MD Visits Kenya to Deepen Regional Waste Management Collaboration

The Managing Director of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Madam Doris Adjei, has undertaken a strategic working visit to Kenya as part of the company’s commitment to advancing environmental sustainability, strengthening regional operations and fostering knowledge-sharing across Africa.

The visit follows the successful rollout of Zoomlion Kenya’s operations in Nairobi under the city’s integrated waste management programme. Since commencing operations, the company has made notable strides in improving waste collection and sanitation services in the Kenyan capital.

Madam Adjei’s visit is intended to provide first-hand insight into the company’s activities in Kenya, engage key stakeholders within the waste management ecosystem and assess ongoing operations in Nairobi and Mombasa. The exercise also seeks to identify opportunities to enhance operational efficiency and improve service delivery.

Since beginning operations on March 27, 2026, Zoomlion Kenya has evacuated more than 55,000 tonnes of waste across Nairobi. This achievement represents a significant increase in the city’s waste evacuation capacity, exceeding previous levels by more than four times.

Before the company’s intervention, Nairobi faced serious sanitation challenges, including approximately 109 illegal dumpsites scattered across the city. In response, Zoomlion launched a large-scale legacy waste clearance programme to remove accumulated waste from these sites and transport it to the designated disposal facility at the Dandora Dumpsite.

During her visit, Madam Adjei met with staff and project managers to review operational performance and discuss strategies for continuous improvement. She also held engagements with officials of the Nairobi County Government to strengthen collaboration and reaffirm the shared commitment to delivering sustainable waste management solutions.

A key highlight of the visit was a tour of the Dandora Dumpsite, where she inspected ongoing engineering and waste management interventions aimed at addressing decades of accumulated waste. Current improvements include the rehabilitation of internal roads, the reorganisation of tipping operations and the implementation of a 24-hour operational system designed to enhance efficiency and reduce traffic congestion.

Beyond addressing immediate sanitation concerns, Zoomlion is partnering with city authorities to implement a comprehensive waste management system that will improve environmental quality, public health and overall urban sanitation in Nairobi.

As part of its long-term strategy, the company plans to introduce a modern secondary waste collection system supported by four zonal transfer stations. Each facility is expected to process between 800 and 1,200 tonnes of waste daily, significantly enhancing waste consolidation and transportation across the city.

In addition, preparations are underway for the construction of a state-of-the-art waste processing and resource recovery facility at Ruai. With a projected capacity of 3,600 tonnes per day, the facility is expected to be operational by the end of November 2026. It will support recycling, composting and other resource recovery initiatives, helping to reduce reliance on landfill disposal while advancing circular economy practices.

The programme has been deliberately designed to promote inclusive participation by integrating informal waste sector actors, community groups and existing waste management operators into the waste management value chain. This approach is expected to generate employment opportunities, encourage community ownership and enhance the long-term sustainability of the initiative.

Madam Doris Adjei’s visit reflects Zoomlion Ghana Limited’s broader vision of exporting home-grown African waste management solutions, strengthening regional partnerships and contributing to the development of cleaner, healthier and more sustainable cities across the continent.
