GOVERNMENT DONATES 2,000 LAPTOPS TO UNIVERSITY OF GHANA TO BOOST DIGITAL SKILLS TRAINING

The Government of Ghana has donated 2,000 laptops to the University of Ghana to boost digital literacy and expand access to technology education across the country. The donation follows an earlier provision of 500 laptops under the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP), a flagship initiative aimed at equipping young Ghanaians with the digital skills required to compete in the global technology industry.

At the presentation ceremony, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, described the programme as a cornerstone of the government’s vision to build a digitally empowered workforce. He noted that the initiative focuses on training young people in key areas such as software engineering, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity and data analytics, with the goal of fostering innovation, enhancing employability and strengthening Ghana’s position in the digital economy.

The Minister commended the University of Ghana for its proactive approach to integrating coding and digital skills into its academic programmes. He highlighted the institution’s decision to make digital literacy and AI education mandatory across various disciplines, including healthcare, business and public policy, as a reflection of the growing influence of technology in modern society.

Mr. George further disclosed plans by the government to deepen its collaboration with the university through the provision of additional computers, improved internet infrastructure and specialised AI training programmes for lecturers and faculty members.

He also called on private sector organisations, particularly financial institutions and telecommunications companies, to support the initiative by providing sponsorship opportunities, mentorship programmes and employment pathways for graduates. The Minister acknowledged the contributions of industry partners such as Google, MTN, Telecel and Huawei for their continued support of Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.

The newly donated laptops are expected to enhance teaching, learning, research and innovation at the university, providing students with greater access to the digital tools and resources needed to develop practical skills and create solutions to real-world challenges.
